Michael Gargaro
Post-Doctoral Research Associate

Michael Gargaro joined the UCL Department of Biochemical Engineering in April 2026. His work focuses on refining Life Cycle Inventory methodologies and building data libraries to enable more precise sustainability evaluations for vaccine manufacturing.
Michael is a PDRA at VaxHub Sustainable, leading the development of a “best practice” Life Cycle Inventory framework within Grand Challenge 2. He is responsible for sourcing and refining data inputs to build precise libraries of vaccine manufacturing processes, facilitating sustainability hotspot analysis and circular economy facility design. Michael applies his expertise in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate the environmental benefits of novel manufacturing routes and the re-use of biopharmaceutical waste streams.
Prior to joining the Hub, he worked as a Research Analyst at LCAworks and completed a PhD at the University of Surrey, in collaboration with the University of Aberdeen. His doctoral research modelled the environmental impact and land sparing potential of vertical farming across the UK, producing the first primary data-driven environmental impact assessments comparing vertical and field-based agriculture, while developing novel approaches for incorporating soil emissions for integration in LCA.
